How exactly does it open the bottle?

Push the needle down through the center of the cork until it reaches the wine. Then pump the sleeve. Air goes in under the cork and the pressure lifts it up the neck on its own — usually in three to seven pumps.

Does it work on synthetic corks and screw caps?

It is built for natural cork, and that is where it shines. Dense synthetic corks can take more pumps and some very rigid ones will not lift at all. Screw caps and champagne bottles are not what this tool is for.

Is the needle safe around food and wine?

Yes — it is food-grade stainless steel and it only passes through the cork. When you're done, the needle snaps back inside the body magnetically, so nothing sharp is loose in your drawer or bag.
